Study Break: Mad Men Yourself
***warning: there is no meaningful educational content in this blog post. it’s just a fun break from passing out all the a/v equipment at school. unless you like moving all those projectors all through the building. maybe you do.***
Are you a fan of the AMC series Mad Men? Wish you had come of age in the Hip Sixties instead of the Big Hair Eighties? Or do you just have a penchant for procrastination that can best be fed by tinkering online?
Then you might want to Mad Men Yourself. Pick a body, accessorize it, and plop yourself right onto the TV show set.
Then download a Twitter icon:

or an iPhone/Facebook image:

or make yourself the star of the show:

One of the things I like about this tool is that it allows you to modify the avatar’s body size. So whether you are svelte enough to be a model in one of Mad Men’s ad campaigns or a bit more on the zaftig side, you can see yourself reflected in the site’s choices. I like this, because as someone on the zaftig side of life, I’ve worried for a long time that avatars are always far slimmer than my genetic/peasant heritage permits. And being on the liberal side of life, I don’t like it when kids see that the digital world is a thin-people-only world.
Wait … wait … wait … maybe there’s one educational purpose: these days, we seem to need little icons to represent us in Moodles, on our Edublogs accounts, and more. You could use Mad Men Yourself for that. But since you can Mad Men Yourself to have a martini in your hands, you might not want to invite your students to do it …
