Reading Rainbow is one of the best television shows. I always felt like this was a nourishing program for my sons to watch. I think that the absolute best way for anyone to spend time reading is to read about what is of special interest. This show presented viewers with ideas for future reading. It is sad to think about how some people struggle with reading materials that are not of interest but are required just for the sake of working on reading skills. This seems like a real misplacement of time and energy. When someone reads about topics of interest, it may require virtually no energy on their part. The energy is attached to the topic of interest. With enjoyable reading, there is far less energy spent on trying to formulate meaning out of a sea of words. With enjoyable reading, the words are simply the vehicle to discover more about topics of interest. Interested readers can sail through the words like riding on a coasting bicycle. The topical interest is the momentum. It is certainly important to recognize that many readers do struggle with deciphering written language. For those readers, even materials with topics of interest may still be a great struggle. I would propose that Reading Rainbow could be alternated with another program that does focus on reading fundamentals. Perhaps the Reading Rainbow creators could simply modify their creative efforts to fulfill both needs.
