My Two New Books! (Final AASL Conference Post - I promise!)

I know, I know, it’s been a month since AASL ended, so I can’t believe that I’ve waited this long to talk about the two books I have that were released at the conference!

21st Century Learning in School Libraries, edited by Kristin Fontichiaro

21st-Century Learning in School Libraries gathers the best practitioner and researcher perspectives on what quality learning looks like in school libraries.  Contributors include Ross Todd, Violet Harada, Barbara Stripling, Carl Harvey, Leslie Preddy, and more. It’s a big thick book full of great visions, strategies, and ideas.

Carl blogged about it here.

The second release was my first book for middle-grade kids: Go Straight to the Source, about using primary sources.  It’s part of the Information Explorer series.  Inspired by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills and the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, the series looks at various information strategies: Web site evaluation, constructing a good search, notetaking, synthesis, reflection, online collaboration, primary source analysis, and more.

I’m very proud that five of the eight books in the series were written by six my colleagues in the Birmingham Public Schools (the book on online collaboration had, naturally, two authors!). The series doesn’t officially launch until January, but Laura over at the Bedtime Book Talks blog snagged a copy at AASL and gives a sneak peek of it here, including a peek at my favorite page in the whole book!

As one of my colleagues said about this series, “Wow - these books are so good that I’d buy them even if I didn’t know the authors.”

My thoughts exactly. How often do we get to really stop and listen to our day-to-day colleagues as they talk about a subject they know really well? It’s an enormous pleasure, and I can’t wait until I can have the full set in my library.

Even better, the publisher was so excited by school librarians’ feedback to the series that four additional titles are in the works!
