I can appreciate that, but I would then suggest a door to an external hallway so staff members can access the workroom after normal school hours. However, I'd place a one-way lock on the door that opens into the library from the workroom to make sure the library stays secure.

I think there are two ways of looking at the copy room. One, it's a pesky annoyance and you are committed to a 30-year career of unjamming the Xerox machine. Or two, you have a constant stream of staff and can be in more regular contact without leaving the library!

As for storing periodicals, well, let's just say this was based on a real library ... and that some things in the current layout are BEGGING to be converted into other spaces. I'm just sayin'!

I would second Edi's comment regarding a collaborative work space. ALso, libraries need to consider items that would enhance 'going green' such as bamboo flooring materials or cork paneling, both manufactured without toxic glues and/or materials.

I'd have to say almost any use of space is an iimprovement over my media center which still looks like (and consequently functions like) a 20th century library.
In the diagram you've provided, I would suggest provided a collaborative workspace.
