Behind Every Good Commencement Speech: A Librarian.
Congratulations to Michigan’s own Kalamazoo Central High School for winning the White House’s competition to receive a commencement speech by President Obama. Click on the New York Times story below to learn more.
What the story won’t tell you is who was behind the scenes in organizing the student videos submitted for the contest.
Kalamazoo Central’s administration asked school librarian Ann Miller to take the lead in pulling together the video proposal. Hearty congratulations to her for this and many other initiatives at her school.
I was doing some consulting work in Portage, Kalamazoo’s neighboring district, when the voting began for this. Those librarians spent their break making sure they had voted. Some people describe Michigan’s 700+ school districts as instinctively competitive in nature, a feeling that seems to increase as more districts scrabble for a shrinking pot of funds. But not that day. It sure felt great to see one district pulling for another — and it worked!
