OCLC: How Libraries Stack Up
So every now and again, someone references my online dating and advocacy post and am asked how it’s going. All I can say is that when one guy said, “So … wanna talk about how libraries are dead?” I literally felt my blood boil. Because NO. I DON’T.
Maybe if I could ever find a good parking space at any of the many outstanding public libraries we have, I’d feel differently. But when I walk into our local libraries, I see lines to check out and shelf after shelf of books being held for patrons. My students who work at the Ann Arbor District Library while earning their MSI tell me that they had to remake all of their felt board figures so they’d be big enough to be seen by their bigger-than-ever preschool storytime crowds of up to 100 people. (”We only had 80,” one said, somewhat disappointed.)
To misquote Shakespeare, “H— hath no fury like a librarian scorned.”
If only I had had a copy of OCLC’s How Libraries Stack Up facts sheet (below). Check it out … you never know when its information could come in handy for you. (At the very least, I could have balled it up and used it as a gag …)
