Kids Read Comics event this weekend

Boy, I sure love it when Detroiters roll up their sleeves and show their grit.  (We like it a little bit more when we almost get a no-hitter, but we force ourselves to get over it.)

This coming weekend Kids Read Comics, a free comics/graphic novels conference/event about kid-friendly graphical content being hosted at the Dearborn Public Library (for those of you from out of state, that’s the City Henry Ford Built).

Special guests representing titles likely to be on your library shelf include Raina Telgemeier (Babysitter’s Club; Smile) and Ruth Barshaw (Ellie McDoodle). In fact, there seems to be some conscious effort here to make sure that women are well-represented as prsenters.

While you won’t be seeing me in the costume parade, you might just see me here, as Erin was a guest speaker in our children’s lit class a few years back and is fantastic, and my UM students give rave reviews to Jerzy Drozd’s presentations:

PANEL DISCUSSION: COMICS WORKSHOPS IN LIBRARIES
Sat, June 12, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM
How do you coordinate and develop comics workshops in your library or school? How do you find a teaching artist, negotiate funding, and promote the event to your patrons? Join Erin Helmrich, Sharon Iverson, and Anne Drozd of the Ann Arbor District Library, with moderator Jerzy Drozd, for an interactive discussion about the kinds of programming they’ve developed and some of the hurdles they’ve had to overcome in order to make their library a haven for comics-loving patrons.

or here, as I’m a fan of several of these folks’ work…

PANEL DISCUSSION: DRAWING FROM LIFE
Sat, June 12, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
Not every comic tells a made up story about costumed adventurers, fantasy princesses or rodents dressed in human clothes. There are many engaging comics memoirs, histories, biographies and more that explore real people and real events. Join Dave Roman, Raina Telgemeier, Ryan Estrada, Jim Ottaviani, and Stephanie Mannheim as they talk with moderator Paul Storrie about how they’ve brought real life to life in comics form.

Hope to see some Michiganders there!
